Adoption visits are by appointment Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and other times by arrangement. To schedule an appointment, call 575-805-5338. To make sure a staff person is available when you come to visit, please call first.

Safe Haven was founded in 1996 as a private, 501(C)3, non-profit, tax-exempt organization. A group of animal lovers from the Las Cruces area envisioned the need for a sanctuary modeled after the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah—the largest “no-kill” facility in the nation.

Our sanctuary is the largest no-kill facility of its type in Doña Ana County. Shelter is provided for abused and abandoned dogs and cats and those needing a home because owners are no longer able to care for them. We make every effort to adopt out pets into new, loving homes. Animals that are not adopted live out their lives at Safe Haven in dignity, well cared for, and treated with love and respect.

Safe Haven is not affiliated with or financed by any municipal, county, state or federal government agency. We depend on the generosity of the community through monetary gifts, bequests, grants and donations of items to our Thrift Shop, and subsequent Thrift Shop sales.

Fostering can be a wonderful and rewarding way to enjoy the companionship that a pet provides without having the permanent commitment that goes along with pet ownership. By bringing one of our pets into your home while it awaits adoption, you are helping socialize and train that pet, making it even more adoptable. Whatever the reason, fostering might just be right for you. For a Foster Agreement form, click here.
