Board of Directors

Board members serve a three-year term. Each is eligible to serve two consecutive terms, and then a one- year hiatus is required before each can be eligible to run again for a term. Directors serve without compensation.

Kelly Marks

President (2nd Term expires 11/2024)

Kelly holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Notre Dame University of Maryland and a Master of Science in Human Resources Development from Towson University. After working for almost 30 years in the Human Resources field, she retired shortly before moving with her husband to Las Cruces from the East Coast over a year ago. Kelly and her husband are proud to have been claimed by their three wonderful rescue cats.

Kelly currently volunteers at the sanctuary two days a week, in the cattery and walking dogs.

Michael Carvlin

Vice President (2nd Term expires 8/2026)

Michael was born and raised in the New York City metro area. Because of his love for traveling and exploring places, he was thrilled to take a position with NASA in the desert southwest 15 years ago. Michael holds a degree in geography at Montclair State University and worked in the mapping field for 20 years. Having the desire to run his own business, Michael chose to pursue real estate, which is his current occupation. He shares his home with his wife, kids, one rescue dog, and two rescue cats.

Anna M. Morrison, CPA

Treasurer (1st Term expires 10/2025)

Appointed to the SHAS Board of Directors in October 2022, Anna currently serves as its Board Secretary. Until her retirement in December 2021, she served as the Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Controller for a southern New Mexico production home builder. Prior to moving to Las Cruces in 2015, Anna served as an executive consultant to publicly-traded Fortune 100 corporations, the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accounting Officer of a publicly-held company, and as an Audit Manager and associate for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Anna has served on the Boards of various not-for profit organizations including current member-at-large for the Talavera Community Association, past-Treasurer of the Portland, OR Volunteers of America and the Save the Child Foundation; and, as a volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor for the Las Vegas Community College.
Anna and Dale are well-trained by their three opinionated shih tzus. Anna volunteers at the Sanctuary and the Thrift Store throughout each month.

Philip VanVeen

Secretary (1st Term expires 1/2025)

Philip grew up in Roswell, NM where he married his high school sweetheart (Married 40 years) and started his first security business. In 1999, he moved to Las Cruces and founded Eagle Security, LLC. Philip has served on the following boards, CCORSAR - Chavez County Off Road Search and Rescue, NMLA – New Mexico Locksmith Association, SNMDO – Southern NM Diabetes Outreach, and Las Cruces Host Lions. Philip is a loving dog owner and has a great love for animals, he is proud to serve on the SHAS board.

Will Roberson

Director (1st Term expires 9/2026)

Will was born in Oklahoma and grew up in Albuquerque. After high school he went straight into the military and served 6 years in the USARMY. After the military Will moved to Carlsbad NM where he worked in construction and got involved in multiple local church’s. Will met his wife, Victoria in Carlsbad then soon after they got hitched, they moved to Las Cruces in late 2018. Will worked for Xfinity for 4 years as an Internet/Cable Technician. Will now works as an Alarm/Locksmith Technician at Eagle Security. He is very involved in his local church playing on the Worship Team. Will and Victoria have had many Fur Kids. Right now they have Dracarys, a 160lb Great Dane who wants a lap to sit in, and Brunhilda (Brunes for short) who is a Ragdoll cat.
